REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED!

This offseason, RGL Highlander will host its first-ever Newcomer Cup! It is a free three-day weekend tournament for players with relatively little to no competitive experience. To help foster the talent of these newish players, the cup will also feature assigned coaches for teams. Both team and coach signups start Monday, August 7th!

Map Pool and Schedule

Each division will be divided into double round-robin groups consisting of four teams, which can lead to multiple groups for each individual division. Teams that sign up earlier will have priority in terms of placement and getting a spot in the preseason cup, so please sign up as soon as possible instead of waiting until the deadline.
  • Team Registration closes: Wednesday, August 23rd @ 11:59 PM EDT
  • Coach Sign-ups close: Monday, August 28th @ 11:59 PM EDT
  • Division Placements and Coach-Team Assignments: Wednesday, August 30th
  • Group stage round 1: Saturday, September 2nd @ 8:30 PM EDT
  • Group stage round 2: Saturday, September 2nd @ 9:30 PM EDT
  • Group stage round 3: Sunday, September 3rd @ 8:30 PM EDT
  • Group stage round 4: Sunday, September 3rd @ 9:30 PM EDT
  • Group stage round 5: Monday, September 4th @ 8:30 PM EDT
  • Group stage round 6: Monday, September 4th @ 9:30 PM EDT

All King of the Hill maps will be played first to four rounds won. The payload map will be played first to two halves won.

Coaches

If you are interested in coaching a team for the cup, register here. Coaches should meet the following criteria:
  • Not currently be on probation or banned
  • Have no non-demo-related bans within the last one year
  • Have no non-demo-related warnings within the last six months
  • Have played at least three full seasons of IM HL or higher (or equivalent from another league) within the last three years

As a coach, if your team places, you will also receive that trophy on your RGL profile.

Divisions and Player Eligibility

As this is a cup designed for players with little to no experience in competitive TF2, there is a limit to the number of seasons a participant can have previously played. To play in the cup, players may have no more than five seasons played in HL and no more than six seasons played in 6s if they have exclusively played only one of those two formats (cups do not count). If a player has experience in both formats, the maximum number of seasons allowed is five total. HL and 6s seasons played simultaneously will count as one season in this case. For example, if a player played 6s Season 11, 6s Season 12, and HL Season 15, it would count as them having only two seasons of experience because 6s Season 12 and HL Season 15 occurred simultaneously.

Class restrictions do not exist in this cup unless specifically noted below. Paraphrasing our Newcomer Division Guidelines, if a player should be class restricted from any class in this cup, that player is considered too experienced to play in the cup. The exception to this guideline for the cup is AM 6s players playing in Division 1, and more details of these restrictions are found below.

Division 1

  • HL experience up to non-playoffs-Intermediate
  • 6s experience up to Amateur*

Division 2

  • HL experience up to non-playoffs-Amateur
  • 6s experience up to Newcomer

Division 3

  • HL experience up to non-top-4 Newcomer
  • 6s experience up to non-playoffs-Newcomer

*Restrictions down to Amateur-level HL allowed on these players if no HL Intermediate-playoffs experience or higher

On what server do I play my matches?

na.serveme.tf is a great place to easily book a competitive-ready server. Be mindful that the site has a limited number of available servers, especially for free users, so make sure that you book as early as you can!

You can also rent a server from a reputable server hoster, such as SwiftyServers or Nodecraft, for around $10 a month.

See our TF2 Server Management 101 Guide for more information on how to control your server.
